BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANIZATION: 

CAMELOT (Computerized Analysis of MEdical data through Learning and Optimization Technologies) acts in the medical imaging software market, developing advanced quantification tools that help clinicians and radiologists make faster and more accurate decisions for diagnosis and therapy. The company commercializes its solutions both as stand-alone products and as modules for OEM integration into Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS).

The company commitment in providing effective solutions to real industry problems has rapidly brought CAMELOT to establish a large network of strategic relationships, and be chosen as coordinator of POLITECMED, a regional consortium of large enterprises and SMEs involved in the biomedical industry, with the collaboration of research institutions.

The success of CAMELOT is based on its ability to combine its staff strong technical know-how, with a genuine market orientation. The success in medical imaging has pushed CAMELOT to explore new markets where its expertise in generating valuable knowledge from data represents a competitive advantage. Today CAMELOT customizes and integrates its solutions in products of the broader healthcare industry as well as of other industries.

MAIN TASKS WITHIN THE PROJECT: 

Within FUTURA CAMELOT leads the Machine Learning (WP6) and Exploitation and dissemination (WP10). Regarding WP10 CAMELOT, as a SME, is mainly involved in the Exploitation phase. CAMELOT is also involved in medical WPs, 2, 4 and 5 within which he will collaborate mainly with UNIVDUN and IGT, mainly on co-registration of different imaging flows.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE: 

The company’s core business is the development of software products for radiology with specific attention to MR and US imaging. CAMELOT’s key persons have a considerable experience in the quantitative analysis of biomedical images. Their decade-long involvement in a number of international research projects, and the company’s recent participation to three national initiatives will ensure the experience necessary to successfully manage the project and its R&D activities. Experiences of CAMELOT in collaborative projects are: associated Partner of the EUTRAIN Project (funded by the EU commission under the Marie Curie Initial Training Networks program, Call: FP7-PEOPLE-2011-ITN); partner of the “IMMERGO3D”, an R&D regional Project with the goals to develop innovative software for semi-automated image segmentation in radiology; partner of “3D DCE-MRI for Rheumatology”, an R&D Project funded by Regione Liguria in collaboration with Esaote Spa, whose results are now being validated for FDA approval and are planned to be exploited commercially starting from the first semester of 2014.

CAMELOT is also coordinator of the POLITECMED network, funded by Regione Liguria. POLITECMED is a consortium of large enterprises and SMEs involved in the biomedical industry, where CAMELOT is involved in technology transfer among research partners and coordination and implementation of common training initiatives in the field of computerized biomedical image analysis and algorithms for machine learning.

People

Dr Matteo Santoro, Camelot CEO and director of innovation, he had several research experiences in Italy and North America, including a postdoctoral fellow at IIT-MIT. His recent research focused on theory and algorithms for machine learning and medical image analysis, whereas his doctorate research focused on combining computer vision techniques and formal methods for assistive robotics. He holds a MSc in Physics and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Naples, Italy.

Dr Sofia Mosci has long experience in theory and algorithms for sparsity-based data representation and optimization methods for learning. She earned the Certificate in Technology Entrepreneurship at the Santa Clara University, CA, and MSc and PhD in Physics from the University of Genoa, Italy. She has also been a research fellow at Institut Curie, Paris, France.

Dr Curzio Basso has a long experience in efficient software development for quantitative analysis of bio-images and data based on machine learning. Previous to Camelot, he has been a research fellow at the CS Department of the University of Genoa, Italy, where he worked on the analysis of medical images and the extraction of imaging biomarkers. Previously, he was at the University of Freiburg, Germany, and at the University of Basel, where he earned a PhD in Computer Science.

Dr Mario Esposito has as strong experience in software development for image registration and multimodal fusion. Mario also has research experience in image analysis with a focus on registration problems and in robot and sensor systems in both real and simulated scenarios, achieved through research fellowships at the Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics and at the Institute of Biostructures and Bioimaging of the National Research Council (CNR). Mario holds a PhD in Computer Science and MSc in Physics from the University of Naples, Italy.
